 Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone: A Primal Guide to Animal Magic Although I haven't read this book personally, it comes highly recommended. With sections on animal magic, shapeshifting and totems, this book is sure to be a riveting read.
This animal totem book is presented in a down-to-earth, easy-to-read format. The information is derived from personal animal observation done by the author himself. The author writes on the subject with authority, and has a light, breezy, and fun approach. Well planned, and nicely organized, Animal-Wise discusses a wide range of over 100 animal totems and their meanings. This is not a stand-alone book. Rather, you as the reader must participate fully in the book to fully utilize the power of your totems. This is a very interactive book. If you want to know more about totems, and learn how to work with them, this is an excellent book to begin with.

This book is recommended because it is written from the Seneca philosphical viewpoint. Specifically, the Seneca of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Totems discusses the dynamics of animal totems within the practice of Seneca shamanism, dream interpretation, and vision (spirit) journeying. Includes techniques, exercises, and an animal totem dictionary.
I purchased this book several years ago, and still refer to it often. This book adds a strong foundation to your knowledge of animal totems, and also includes techniques on working with totems. Specifically, this book has a great emphasis on birds. A huge listing of bird totems and their meanings are included along with great information on understanding bird language, and using feather magic. The back of the book has an incredibly thorough, and informative dictionary of over 100 animal totems. Some of the illustrations are primitive, and some sections are a little too verbose for my taste. However, overall, this book is a real gem. The author is well informed, and passionate about the subject. A must to your spiritual library if you need a good basic guide to animal symbolism.
