What are the symbols on the new RUSH album?

Symbols on the new RUSH album (Clockwork Angels). What do the RUSH symbols mean?

Symbols on the new RUSH album (Clockwork Angels). What do the RUSH symbols mean?

Hello,

Can you tell me what the symbols on the new RUSH album are?

I am a big fan of the rock band RUSH. They always have symbols in their album covers. But THIS new release is ALL symbols (the album is called Clockwork Angels, and features the hit single, Caravan).

I don't know where to start to figure out their meaning. Would you mind taking a look at them, then maybe steer me in the right direction to figure out their meaning?

I will attach a jpeg of the symbols so you can see.
THANK YOU,
Robert

Avia's response to
"Symbols on the new RUSH album" question:

Hi Robert,

Around the clock symbols are:
Noon: Copper
One: Brimstone
Two: Purification (sometimes interchangeable with a square cross, which is an earth symbol)
Three: Mercury
Four: Winter
Five: Zinc
Six: Sun
Seven: Aquarius
Eight: Etheric oil, it could also be Quicklime
Nine: Neptune
Ten: Lead
Eleven: Earth

Each of these symbols is vast in complex meanings depending upon which esoteric system you consult.

Also, bear in mind these are artistic renditions. Slight differences in strokes in even the simplest symbols can mean something different. For example, the Brimstone symbol is also a doppleganger for Glass depending upon the placement of cross sections.

I've written about some of these symbols (see links below).

You should also do your own research for further meanings of the symbols on the RUSH album. Try Wikipedia, your library, Adam McLean's Alchemy website, or even a university might help.

Here are my resource links:

It might even be worthwhile to contact the band manager for further information on the RUSH symbols and the band's intention. Clearly, the symbol meanings here are layered.

For example, I can read meanings of the symbols as they are assigned to their specific hours (numbers). So, a look at symbolic number meanings might be revealing too.

Of course, the creator/designer/author of this album cover would be the source for full symbolic disclosure.

The RUSH symbols on this album are a grand examples of using symbols for personal (or in this case, group) expression. There is deeper meaning here. The superficial level of meaning can be intuited by RUSH's audience, but the deepest layer of meaning might be known only to a few (the author, of course, and a scant percent of people who are like-minded and could follow this line of interpretation).

THANK YOU!
by: Robert

I KNEW you would know what these symbols on the RUSH album were..

They named their album (with that photo on the cover) Clockwork Angels.

If you have never heard of them, or never heard them play. I would suggest the 2 NEW songs JUST released on Itunes " Caravan" and "BU2B" or start with the entire CD Vapor Trails, or Snakes & Arrows. If you do listen, let me know what you think... THANKS.. Robert

Rush's Clockwork Angels
by: Theresa

Funny thing, I researched the alchemy symbols and came upon your website. I found it to be very interesting as I too, like Robert, was trying to dig deeper into the understanding of the symbols on the cover of the newest RUSH release.
I love RUSH and the deep meanings in each song. Like you referred to layered meanings, that's why I love the lyrics. The music is very meaningful. I would love to know the intended meanings of the artists involved in these symbols but also know that the artists true interpretation may only be for thier knowledge so as to leave that up to the imaginations of the listeners.
Thank you for giving us a great start to our search of meaning.

Geddy's Bass Guitar Symbol
by: Rushfan03

I like your thread greatly!

Has anyone commented on the Symbol that adorns Geddy's Bass Guitar? The symbol looks like a "U" atop a short staff which in turn is crossed by three short transverse lines.

Any ideas?

FYI
by: Rush Fan

That's the cover of the single release. I haven't heard any confirmation that this will also be the artwork for the album once it is released.

Still...good info - thanks!

Interesting Stuff
by: Anonymous

Very long time Rush fan and it never ceases to amaze me how the band remains so creative on so many levels that they continue to cast so many puzzles in their music and album concepts. I'm just guessing that the symbolism on this will relate to the tracks on the album somehow. The final album will likely have 12 songs to match the 12 symbols- just my guess. I can't wait to get this one in my hands to check it out. ROCK!

Earth or Air?
by: Anonymous

The symbol at 11:00 could also be Air, depending on which end is up. This Air symbol is at the bottom of band member Alex Lifeson's picture in the Tour Program. The symbols on Geddy Lee's and Neil Peart's pictures are Infinity standing on end (possibly) and Winter, respectively.

I also note that the moon in the phase window is waning, just past full. Interesting.....

Seems to me...
by: Anonymous

After reading the entries above where it was pointed out that the logo on Geddy's base(which is the same as the U in R3U)is Amalgamation or a combining of multiple entities into 1 new entitiy. That being said I would say that the 3 that overlays the capital R stands for three(3) men amalgamted into 1 entity R, ergo RUSH.

Rush's Evolution NEW
by: Vigilantius

One thing that fascinates me about Rush (especially of course Neal Peart) is how they've evolved as people as they've gotten older. They made lots of songs like Freewill and Tom Sawyer that were Ayn Rand, Atheist, if you're spiritual at all you're an idiot...but then even then they made songs like Xanadu that had esoteric themes.

Then later they've made songs like Mystic Rhythms and Animate (a hymn to the goddess) which show as they've gotten older and had some major experiences, especially Peart who lost his wife and daughter, they've "looked in, looked out, looked around" to the point now they're putting esoteric/occult symbols on their album and in their Time Machine tour, it's all over their equipment. Led Zepplin was a major influence on them and it's awesome to see another group of creative artist key into the cheat codes of the universe that helped Zepplin be so great.

RUSH in other ways. NEW
by: Nicole

Honestly, if you have ever known how intelligent these amazing musicians are, then you'd also know it's not just the symbols. Their songs are deep and complex, too. Not to mention, their music is what I like to call an "acquired taste" because their music is like no other. Some people just aren't in to this simply because it isn't made clear for them or it's "old". I feel out of place because I'm a 16 year old girl listening to them and I couldn't be happier being out of place. There is so much more to music then sex, drugs, women, etc. So, really there is truly more then the symbols. I do understand there is a lot to be understood already with them, but listen to their music. If you want a true RUSH experience, listen to their older stuff including Moving Pictures. Also, if you get the chance, listen to some live recordings. They are amazing live! Thank you for your time.

Spirituality NEW
by: Anonymous

Vigilantius, have you listened to any of their last humm I don't know... 10 albums? The atheist theme is forefront in their music. Roll the bones? Freewill? The Malignant narcissism video? Caravan? BU2B etc etc. Don't sweat it though, not believing in an invisible friend in the sky does not mean one lack spirituality.
