Wrapped Around Vine Tattoo Meaning and Vine Symbolism

Many times, I see people using the vine as a decorative element, or a connecting feature in a tattoo piece, but they overlook that vine tattoo meaning when doing so. Big mistake. The vine has profound meaning like connection, friendship, strength and determination. Learn more about vine tattoo meaning here.

Vines are a great way to express connection, evolution and so much more in skin art. These dear plants wind their way through symbolic history. They are so much more than pretty tendrils tattooed around arms or ankles. They twirl with symbolic meaning.

Part of vine tattoo meaning comes from their biological stature. Whoa? I mean, if we take a look at how these plants live and grow – it speaks volumes about their deeper symbolic meaning.

To wit, vines can grow in the most remarkable inhospitable places. The most unlikely, unkind environments are no challenge for the fierce will to survive for the vine. In fact, the vine makes its way for its own survival. It will creep and eek into any nook or cranny in order for it to get the stuff it needs to grow. This is symbolic of the will to live…the drive to survive.

Vines are sun-seekers. They’ll curl out into any space to meet the light to insure photosynthesis. This is symbolic for us tattoo-enthusiasts too. For those considering (or who already have) a vine tattoo, it is symbolic of meeting the light. On a philosophical level…this means striving to meet the light in faith, spirituality, friendship, family…you get the idea. I think that’s such a powerful and poignant aspect of vine tattoo meaning.

Vines also seek security. Their tendrils are equipped with little hooks or adhesive devices that cling to structures. Once hooked in, they can be quite strong. This is symbolic of seeking anchor in the storm. It’s symbolic of having the ability to cling so something, and stay stuck to it. This could mean anything from clinging to an ideal, a way of life, a belief…or even a community (friends, family, mate). The vine tattoo makes a statement that says: “I anchor myself to _________”…you fill in the blank.

Who knew just looking at the biology of the vine could offer so much symbolic meaning? It’s with all things in Nature. Everywhere we look, there is a deeper meaning.

If this doesn’t pack a powerful symbolic whallop for this unsuspecting plant, check out a few meanings associated with the vine in legend, lore and history…

For example, early Christianity held the vine as sacred. Israelites hinted the vines were sacred trees in the Old Testament. There are some scholars who propose the vine is associated with the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. This is symbolic of divinity, life, faith and provision.

Fruit-bearing vines, like the grapevine is often associated with provision too. Grapevines are symbols of bounty and big beautiful harvests. Grapes, and their vines are sacred to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. As such, these vines take on a jovial symbolism, representing celebration. But in this regard, they also represent hard work. Those grapes (and the wine they produce) don’t magically appear, no matter how hard Bacchus may have waved his magic god-wand over them. Nope. It takes human determination, a willingness to work….specifically…work for an end-product that is shared with the world. This could mean working towards a goal, an ideal, or a vision.

In ancient Sumerian writings, the vine, especially the leaf is a symbol for “life”. This plant was a sacred icon for their Mother Goddess. Essentially, the vine in this culture was a symbol of life. Ancient Asian texts note the vine as the herb of life. Certain medicinal treatments used were said to be an elixir of good health.

All this great symbolic information for a lil ‘ol vine. It just goes to show…big (and very cool) symbolism comes from the most unlikely sources.
