Symbolic and Spiritual Meaning of August

Symbolic and Spiritual Meaning of August

Last Updated on August 1, 2023 by Avia

I love the sizzling energy that softly oozes from the month of August.  That said, it isn’t my favorite time of year. Why? Well, because heat doesn’t agree with me. Nevertheless, August is when I can revel in abundant butterflies, appreciate the bounty of a well-grown garden, and maybe even chill out with a fluffy pulp fiction novel (with an electric fan properly spinning in front of me while reading, lol).  Whether you can relate or not, I thought it would be a keen idea to talk about the spiritual meaning of August with the goal of learning more about this brilliant month, its symbolic prominence in the parade of months and I also wanted to share some cool stuff to do to make your August as spectacular as possible.

History and Origins of the Month of August

This is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and has a rich history and fascinating origins. The name “August” is believed to have been derived from the Latin word “Augustus,” meaning revered or dignified.

In ancient Rome, this month was originally known as Sextilis, as it was the sixth month in their calendar. However, it later became known as Augustus when Emperor Augustus Caesar claimed it for himself. He wanted his own month to honor his victories and consolidate his power.

Interestingly, August originally had only 30 days, while July had 31. But when Julius Caesar’s successor, Emperor Augustus Caesar, came into power, he didn’t want his month to be shorter than Julius Caesar’s namesake month. So he took a day from February and added it to August! No ego in that, eh? I guess when you’re the emperor you can do stuff like that, lol.

In terms of symbolism and significance throughout history, August has often been associated with harvest time and abundance. It marks a period of transition between summer and autumn when crops are ripening for harvest.

This snazzy month is rich history rooted in mythology and ancient beliefs. In many cultures, this time of year was associated with harvests, abundance, and the changing seasons. Here are a few different cultures in which the meaning of August has a strong influence:
