The Symbolic and Spiritual Meaning of Moving

Last Updated on April 23, 2024 by Avia

Various sources agree the average American moves about 10-11 times in their lifetime.  I’ve got that figure beat in spades, and I’m sure many of you reading this do too. With every relocation, I learn something new. In fact, I’ve rather come to regard relocating as a spiritual and symbolic event. Hence, I thought I’d share some insights I’ve gained about the spiritual meaning of moving.

A Word to Brave Folks Who Dare to Move

Almost everybody moves from one home to another.  Lots of different reasons for this.  Some move for love.  Some people move for money or a career.  Others of us move for less understandable reasons.

I want to speak to that population of movers who pull up stakes…just because it seems like the right thing to do.  My practical peeps might be scratching their heads at this point.  I can hear their arguments…”Why!?!  The headache of moving!  The expense!  The planning!  Need I say more?”

Agreed.  Moving can be an arduous undertaking, especially if you don’t travel light.  I’ve moved across the nation twice in a little over two years.  I’m not exactly a light traveler, but I think I’m slimmer than most.

But this post isn’t about the logistics of moving.  It’s about the symbolic meaning of moving.  Those of us who move without a conventional, understandable reason (like a job) might be interested in the deeper meaning of moving.

At its core, I believe the spiritual meaning of moving deals with change.  I can hear the mental comments now: “Well, yeah!  Duh, Avia!  There’s precious little in life that means change more than moving an entire household!”  Bear with me…let me elaborate…

If moving = change, then what does change equal?  What does change mean?  Why do we want change?  How do we deal with change?  What does moving do to us that changes us on the inside?

See, moving isn’t just about changing our external environment.  The act of moving changes us on the inside too.  And that’s what living a symbolic life does too.  When we see things from a spiritual, symbolic perspective – we’re changed.  Sometimes profoundly.

Consider…when you move, everything pretty much changes.  The environment you’ve once lived in is boxed up, carted off, and plopped in a whole new area.  Then there’s the change of unpacking (for some of us, this is like Christmas, lol).  Then there’s rearranging, maneuvering, logistics.  This doesn’t even mention the new Nature to be experienced in your new locale.  Or the new people, restaurants, markets!

Some of us move for the hell of it.  Others of us move because our lifestyle compels us to, or we might feel inexplicably driven to relocate.  Whichever party you’re a member of, I encourage you to look deeper into the symbolic meaning of moving.  Sure, the process has the potential to overwhelm.  It can be frustrating, taxing, painful even.  But what’s rustling beneath all that stuff?

Beyond the surface inconveniences…Beyond the circumstances of the purpose of moving…Beyond everything else – move means change.  So, I’ll ask again – what does change equal?  What does change mean to you

If you find yourself in the midst of a move, consider the symbolic language of the Universe.  What changes do you need to be complete, complete, fulfilled?  How can you embrace change with more patience, love, or with childlike wonder?  What does change teach?

Spiritual Lessons of Moving

Moving is one of the most significant life changes that can happen to anyone. It’s a time of transition, new beginnings, and letting go of the past. However, it can also be a spiritual experience that offers valuable personal growth and transformation lessons.

Detachment

One essential lesson we learn from moving is detachment. We realize how attached we are to our possessions, people, and places we’ve gotten used to over time. Moving forces us to let go of things that no longer serve us or bring joy into our lives.

Acceptance

Another spiritual lesson learned through moving is acceptance. Change can be challenging to accept at times, especially when it means leaving behind familiar surroundings or people close to us. By embracing change with an open heart and mind, we become more adaptable and resilient in dealing with future transitions.

Appreciation

Moving teaches us gratitude and appreciation for what we have in life. Packing up all our belongings gives us an opportunity to reflect on the things that matter most in our lives: family, friends, health – not just material objects.

Personal Growth

One way of looking at relocating as a spiritual event is by seeing it as an opportunity for personal growth. When we move out of our comfort zones and embrace change, we open ourselves up to new experiences and possibilities. It allows us to let go of old patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us.

Mindfulness

Another way to see relocation as a spiritual event is by practicing mindfulness during the moving process. Mindfulness helps us stay present in the moment, which gives us more clarity on what we truly want in life. It also helps reduce stress levels associated with moving.

Tips on How to Make Moving a Spiritual Practice

Moving can be an overwhelming experience, but incorporating spiritual practices into the process can help ease the stress and provide a deeper meaning to this major life event. Here are some tips on how to make moving a spiritual practice.

1. Set intentions

Before you start packing, take time to reflect on your reasons for moving and what you hope to gain from this change. Do your best to align your energies and adopt a positive mindset. Set positive intentions that align with your values and aspirations.

2. Practice gratitude

Take time every day during the moving process to give thanks for all of the blessings in your life, including the opportunity for growth and new beginnings that come with relocating.

3. Clear out clutter

Moving is a perfect opportunity to declutter both physically and mentally. Let go of items that no longer serve you and release any negative emotions or attachments associated with them.

4. Stay present

Instead of getting caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past, focus on staying present during each step of the moving process. This will help you stay grounded and connected spiritually.

5. Seek support

Don’t hesitate to reach out for emotional or practical support during this transition period. Turn towards loved ones who uplift and encourage you along with seeking professional movers’ services if required. You might even want to consult with an astrologist, a motivational coach, or – quite frankly – a therapist, because moving can be super-stressful. So it never hurts to recruit supportive resources to make the relocation go more smoothly.

By implementing these tips into your relocation journey, you can transform it into a meaningful spiritual practice filled with personal growth opportunities rather than just feeling overwhelmed by logistics alone.
