Earth as a Symbol of Stability - A Grounding Meditation
Earth: Symbol of Stability - A Meditation
I talk about our Earth as a symbol of stability a lot. I'd like to elucidate on that idea with a small meditation we each can incorporate into our daily routine as a means to become more stable and grounded.
Why?
Well, I'm stuck up in my head more often than not. My mind is always running like Roger Bannister. However, there is no victory medal won at the four-minute mark. Rather, the mind is in a constant state of forward motion, propelled toward an elusive goal that never comes.
I'm not the only one who's throne sits mostly in the crown of the human design. That's why I thought I'd share a quick meditation employing the Earth as a symbol of stability and grounding. It's effective in pulling awareness out of the lofty rafters of the mind, and into our bodies - into our Earth - back to the roots that anchor us in awesome stuff like:
- Nurturing
- Calm
- Fortitude
- Security
- Solidarity
- Comfort
- Support
...just to name a few beneficent side-effects of communing with the ground-rules of our Earth.
So, when I find myself overrun by rabid runaway ruminations, I take a few moments to pull my consciousness down from the head and into the Earth.
This practice is kind of like walking downstairs in our energy and body. If we compare our being with a house, we could view ourselves walking softly down from the attic of the mind, and into the rock-foundation of grounded energy.
Here's how we take that walk downstairs:
- Acknowledge the rambunctious energy going on in your mental attic
- Speak to this frenetic 'upstairs' energy in calming tones. No threats, just a gentle enticement for a temporary change of scenery (the mind rebels when it thinks we're taking away it's playtime).
- Situate yourself in a relaxed space.
- Breathe, normally, but see your inhalations circling through your entire body.
- Now experience all your consciousness up in your head - looming there and begin visualizing your breath as thoughts.
- See those airy thoughts in your attic being compelled to move down through your body.
- One by one, the wisps of mental energy become cohesive, forming one entity, and softly float down through your awareness and body.
- See the Earth as a gigantic anchor, and your awareness as a magnet, being drawn down into the Earth's magnificent grace.
- Visualize your mental meanderings pulled through your spine, down and out through your coccyx.
- Your thoughts go out your tailbone, and are pulled even deeper.
*Through your chair. *Pass through the floor. *Pass through the concrete.
- Now tunnel your mental masses into the top crust of the Earth.
- See the moist soil wrap your mental tendrils softly
- See the earthworms and grubs as they wave "howdy" to the remnants of your mind.
- Focus on the rich, nourishing presence of our Earth's body.
- Touch the tap roots of trees and become as anchored in the Earth as they are.
- You can keep submerging yourself into the Earth for as far as you like - even to the hot, molten core of your belly button - the center of the Earth.
- Wherever you land within the Earth, stay there for a few moments and really feel the grounding, healing, warm energy available to you there.
- When you're ready (refreshed, renewed, grounded), begin slowly pulling your awareness back up into your body.
- Thank the essence of Earth for its presence, and for its ability to heal, absorb, renew. Gratitude is the ultimate catharsis, and gratitude to our Earth is nothing short of divine.
Ideally, after this meditation, your awareness should return to your body's solar-plexus; the center of your being. That's a great landing pad for our consciousness.
Don't stress out if your mental mongrels cling to their attic rafters, and refuse to come down to play in Earth's grounding bounty. It might take a few tries.
I hope this sample-meditation inspires you to get anchored, and utilize our luscious Earth as a symbol of stability.
