Learning About Astrology

Most of us know a little about astrology. In my experience, many people snicker a bit when the subject of the zodiac is mentioned, but I find it interesting that 99% of the people I talk to know their own sign.

Why is astrology so often viewed with idle curiosity (or even skepticism), yet almost everyone can tell you his/her own zodiac sign?

Perhaps it’s because there is merit to astrology. Perhaps there is truth in the language of the stars, and deep inside, everyone acknowledges that truth.

Astrology has been around for as long as humankind has observed the activities of the skies. To liken the movement of the planets and stars to our own human lives is a brilliant concept.

Indeed, scientists confirm that the heavens are a macrocosm to our own physical being (which would be the microcosm). In short, the universe mirrors our human-ness and vice versa.

From this perspective, knowing more about astrology seems to be a very savvy practice on our part. Learning the basics gives us an inside track on our lives as well as the lives of others.

There is no magic involved. Astrology is quite simple and straightforward; that’s partly the reason why it’s remained a steadfast tool to humankind to this day.

The term astrology means "knowledge of the stars." A skilled astrologer views the stars and planets as life forces that are experienced within each of us.

The sun is the king of the stars; the center of the stage and likewise, astrology dictates there is a center within each human that represents the sun. That shining part of your being that is your core, your essence. This core is identified as your sun sign and is determined by what time the sun rose upon the moment of your birth. Here, and throughout astrology we see the macrocosm mirroring the microcosm.

The term horoscope is a combination of "hour" and "instrument for viewing." It is termed thusly because through the skies we are able to gain insight (view) into our lives by determining the activities of the heavens at the hour of our birth.

The term zodiac is Greek for "animal." The ancient Greeks improved upon the art of astrology by dividing the heavens into 12 groups known as constellations. Each of these groups is named after a personification (zodiac) that correlates with the nature of each constellation.

If we return to our understanding of the universe as a larger world (macrocosm) identically reflecting humankind as a smaller world (microcosm) and vice versa, we begin to realize that knowing about astrology is more than just memorizing the zodiac sign dates, or zodiac houses.

Further pressing this point, we can recall the words of Hermes Trismegistus:

"That which is below is like that which is above & that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing."

Put in this light, we owe it to ourselves to learn more about astrology because it opens up vast new perspectives for us. It also gives us an incredibly efficient and colorful strategy for living life with profound awareness.
